Allt-A-Bhainne
Introduction:
The Allt-A-Bhainne distillery was originally intended to be a key malt whisky used in Chivas Regal blends. Currently, there are no official bottlings of Allt-A-Bhainne available. Only independent bottlings carry the distillery’s name.
The whisky from Allt-A-Bhainne represents the characteristics of a Speyside whisky. It has notable character but is not as robust and intense as other Highland and Islay malts.
Production:
Allt-A-Bhainne distillery is actively producing and is reputed to produce 4 million liters of pure alcohol per year. The majority of this output is used for blend production.
Malting:
Allt-A-Bhainne distillery does not have its own malting facilities. It serves solely as a production stage for distillation, and malt is sourced externally.
Pot Stills:
The distillery operates two spirit stills (14,500 liters) and two wash stills (22,000 liters). The wash still has a distinctive pear shape, while the spirit still features a tall, conical neck with a reflux bowl at the top. This design contributes to a smoother whisky profile, preventing sharp aromas from entering the spirit.
History:
Founded in 1975 by Chivas Brothers Ltd, the capacity of Allt-A-Bhainne distillery was expanded in 1989 with the addition of two more pot stills. In 2001, Chivas Brothers was acquired by the Pernod Ricard Company.
Visitor Centre:
Unfortunately, there is no visitor center at Allt-A-Bhainne distillery, and public access is not available.
Fun Fact:
Although the distillery has pagoda-shaped kiln tops, they have never served any functional purpose.
