Originally built in 1826 as the Loch Katrine Adelphi Distillery, Ardnamurchan has a rich heritage. Ownership changed over the years, with notable events such as the “Great Gorbals Disaster” in 1906 and subsequent shifts in production.

The Production:

Ardnamurchan Distillery, committed to sustainable production, runs entirely on local renewable energy. They utilize blockchain technology to provide traceability for their single malt whiskies, allowing customers to access information about the production process, including fermentation period, malt selection, and cask maturation. By recycling by-products and generating electricity from hydroelectric power and biomass, the distillery prioritizes environmental consciousness.

The Pot Stills:

Ardnamurchan distills its whiskies using a wash still with a capacity of 10,000 litres and a spirit still with a reflux bowl and thin neck, holding 6,000 litres. The slower distillation process and adjusted cutting points contribute to producing a lighter, finer spirit with distinctive flavors. Unpeated and peated malt varieties, including historic malt variety Golden Promise, are used in the fermentation process.

The Fermentation:

Fermentation at Ardnamurchan takes between 72 and 96 hours, resulting in a fruity wash with strong apple flavors. The distillery employs seven washbacks, made from Douglas fir and steel, to facilitate the fermentation process.

The Warehouse:

Ardnamurchan’s whisky is matured in seven dunnage warehouses using a combination of American and European oak casks, previously utilized for ex-sherry and ex-bourbon maturation. The distillery also conducts barrel experiments, including rum or tequila barrels.
