Construction on the distillery began in 1994 and was officially opened in June 1995 by Ewan McGregor. Queen Elizabeth II visited in 1997 for the opening of the visitor center and purchased two casks for Princes William and Harry.

Introduction:

Arran-Lochranza distillery may be young, but it offers a variety of bottlings. The core range includes Arran 10 Years, Arran Quarter Cask – The Bothy, and Arran Sherry Cask – The Bodega. They also released Arran 25 Years to commemorate Lochranza’s 25th anniversary. Wine finishes such as Sauternes, Amarone, and Port are available, along with the peated variant called Machrie Moor produced by Lagg since 2019. Arran Cream Liqueur with 17% alcohol content has been offered since 2004.

Production:

The distillery sources water from the river Easan Biorach, filtered naturally through six waterfalls from Loch na Davie. This mineral-poor water is used directly for whisky production.

Pot Stills:

Lochranza distillery has four pot stills from Forsyth, renewed in 2017. Two wash stills hold about 7,500 liters each, and two spirit stills hold about 4,300 liters each. They can produce approximately one million liters of alcohol annually. The wide and round pot stills have long necks to allow for good separation of alcohol fumes and achieve the desired fruity character in their whiskies.

Malting:

Concerto barley is used at Lochranza distillery. The malt is mixed with water from Loch na Davie in the mash tun. Traditional methods, along with computerized systems, are employed to monitor the mash. Six wooden washbacks with a volume of 13,000 liters each are used for fermentation, lasting 75 hours, using fruity yeast to create an aroma of apples, bananas, and citrus fruits.

Warehouse:

The distillery’s warehouses contain ex-Bourbon, ex-Sherry, and various wine casks to balance the flavor profile. Dunnage warehouses with rammed floors and racked warehouses are used for vatting and cask finishes. Special warehouses store all barrels for easy tasting, and palletized warehouses store younger barrels standing up.

History:

Construction on the distillery began in 1994 and was officially opened in June 1995 by Ewan McGregor. Queen Elizabeth II visited in 1997 for the opening of the visitor center and purchased two casks for Princes William and Harry.

The distillery boasts a beautiful visitor centre where various tours can be booked.
