The distillery was constructed in 1972 by Justerini & Brooks, with completion in 1974. The first single malt release occurred four years later. The distillery faced a challenge in selecting a whisky name due to the difficulty of pronouncing the Gaelic name Auchroisk for an international audience.

Introduction:

The majority of whisky produced at Auchroisk distillery is used in J&B blended Scotch whisky. There are several independent bottlings available, with the 10-year-old from the Flora and Fauna series being the distillery’s recognized bottling.

The distillery embodies the typical characteristics of a Speyside distillery. The whisky is unpeated, offering a light aroma with some spiciness influenced by the wood used during maturation.

Production:

A major challenge for Auchroisk distillery was sourcing suitable water. After extensive testing and comparison, water from Dorie’s well in Banffshire was deemed adequate for single malt whisky production. The distillery currently produces approximately 3.4 million liters of pure alcohol per year.

Pot Stills:

To meet the demand of Justerini & Brooks, Auchroisk distillery operates four wash stills with a capacity of around 24,000 liters each, as well as four spirit stills with a capacity of approximately 16,500 liters each. The pot stills feature a slight constriction, and the lyne arm rises gradually.

Malting:

Auchroisk distillery does not have its own malting facilities. The malt used is sourced without any peat smoke influence.

Warehouse:

Auchroisk distillery employs a combination of American and European oak casks. European oak imparts more intensity and spiciness, while American oak contributes to a gentle and fresh whisky profile.
