Introduction:
Balcones Whisky offers a wide variety of traditional American whiskies. These whiskies are well balanced and of high quality. The distillery also tries out new ingredients like Hopi blue corn meal, and they do a great job with these experiments.
The Production:
Situated in the heart of Texas, the distillery employs handmade pot stills for production. Balcones creates a range of spirits, including Bourbon, Single Malt, Straight Corn, and Rye.
The Pot Stills:
Balcones uses pot stills with a rounded base and a tall, unobstructed neck. The stills lack a reflux bowl or constricting piece above the middle part. The tall neck helps separate alcohols effectively. Moreover, the lyne arm rises after bending above the neck.
The Warehouse:
Balcones varies its barrel choices, using both traditional oak casks and smaller ones. The smaller casks offer a higher wood – to – volume ratio, intensifying maturation. The southern states’ fluctuating climate speeds up whisky aging.
The History:
Established in 2008 and commencing distillation in 2009, Balcones initially operated from a hand – built distillery until 2015. In early 2016, the distillery moved its operations to a former barrel warehouse.
The Visitor Center:
To visit the distillery for a tour, appointments must be arranged in advance. Interested individuals need to contact the distillery by phone before planning their visit.
