Established in 1817 by brothers John and Thomas McClelland, Bladnoch is the southernmost active distillery in Scotland, situated near the Bladnoch River. The name ‘Bladnoch’ originates from Gaelic, meaning place of flowers.

Introduction:

Bladnoch Distillery is known for its strong fruity and spicy character, often achieved through maturation in Sherry casks. It stands out among Lowland Whiskies for being double distilled and occasionally using peated malt, resulting in a wide range of interesting flavors.

Despite its small size, Bladnoch Distillery has gained recognition among whisky experts, although it is not extensively featured in independent bottlings.

Production:

Bladnoch produces approximately 250,000 liters of pure alcohol annually and sources its water from the local Loch Ma Berry. As one of the few active Lowland distilleries, its production process is carefully monitored, reflecting its status as a family-owned business.

Pot Stills:

Bladnoch operates two stills, both equipped with reflux bowls above the intermediate section to enhance alcohol separation and create a smoother taste profile.

Malting:

Bladnoch procures malt from ‘Simpsons home of good malt’ and utilizes both peated and unpeated malt varieties.

Warehouse:

Bladnoch’s warehouses have a low profile, allowing for storage close to the ground. The milder climate of Southern Scotland, compared to the Highlands, contributes to a slower maturation process, resulting in a unique flavor profile.

History:

Established in 1817 by brothers John and Thomas McClelland, Bladnoch is the southernmost active distillery in Scotland, situated near the Bladnoch River. The name ‘Bladnoch’ originates from Gaelic, meaning place of flowers. Initially a farming distillery, it sourced barley from the surrounding fields. Over the years, Bladnoch changed ownership multiple times, with notable owners including Inverhouse Distillers, Arthur Bell & Sons, and the United Distillers. Today, it is a family-owned business under the ownership of Raymond and Colin Armstrong.

Visitor Centre:

Bladnoch Distillery welcomes visitors with a guided tour, and the visitor center remains open throughout the day. After the tour, guests can enjoy a sample of their whisky, affectionately known as a “wee dram.”
