Founded in 1973 by Chivas Brothers Ltd. Additional stills were purchased shortly after the opening, totaling six by 1978. In 2001, Chivas Brothers was acquired by Pernod Ricard, leading to a temporary closure in 2002. Fortunately, the distillery reopened in 2008 and resumed production.

Introduction:

No Distillery Bottlings: Braeval distillery does not have any bottlings under its own name, but its Scotch whisky is available from independent bottlers.

Character The distillery’s whisky is light and partly sweet, with common notes of floral and vanilla.

Contribution to Blended Whisky: The majority of Braeval’s Scotch goes into the production of blended whiskies, including Chivas Regal.

Production

Annual Output: The distillery produces around 4 million liters of pure alcohol per year.

Ownership: Most of this production is used in blends owned by Chivas Brothers Ltd.

Pot Stills:

Six Pot Stills Braeval has six pot stills, consisting of two large wash stills (22,000 liters) and four “small” spirit stills (10,000 liters).

Distillation Process The wash stills are pear-shaped with a rising lyne arm, while the tall spirit stills have a reflux bowl above the intermediate piece, allowing for a large spirit output without sharp tones.

Malting:

Sourcing Malt Being a young distillery, Braeval has never had its own malting floors. Instead, they purchase unpeated malt from large malters.

Modern Mash Tun The distillery uses a modern stainless steel mash tun.

Warehouse:

Bricked Warehouses The whisky is matured in tall bricked warehouses, and some casks still bear the distillery’s old name.
