The name Bunnahabhain translates to “river mouth”. Established in 1881 by the Greenless Brothers, Bunnahabhain is the northernmost distillery on the Isle of Islay. Over time, a small town formed around the distillery.

Introduction:

Bunnahabhain distillery produces lightly peated Islay Malts known for their salty marine tones. Their distillery bottling range offers a variety of whiskies, including age-stated releases from 12 to 40 years old, as well as a few no age statement expressions.

Production:

Bunnahabhain distillery has an annual production volume of approximately 2.5 million liters of alcohol. The distillation water is sourced from the underground river Margadale and is pumped out through pipes.

Pot Stills:

The distillery operates four pot stills, with two wash stills having a capacity of 30,000 liters and two spirit stills half that size. The pot stills have a distinctive pear-shaped and round design, resulting in a somewhat spicy and rough whisky profile.

Malting:

The malt used at Bunnahabhain distillery comes from the Port Ellen maltings, also located on the Isle of Islay.

Warehouse:

Bunnahabhain’s warehouses are traditional flat bricked dunnages, situated near or in close proximity to the sea. This allows the whisky to interact with the maritime air of Islay during maturation.
