Introduction:

Glen Ord distillery, located on the “Black Isle” in the Northern Highlands, has a range of official bottlings that are now largely sold out. These include 12-year-old, 15-year-old, 18-year-old, 25-year-old, 32-year-old, and 36-year-old expressions. The 12-year-old bottling is a key feature of the distillery’s offerings. Since 2007, 12-year-old Glen Ord has also been released under Diageo’s “Singleton” brand, targeting the Asian market. Independent bottlings from Glen Ord are rare, with Douglas Laing and Signatory Vintage being the main sources. The majority of Glen Ord’s single malt production is used in Dewar and Johnnie Walker blends.

The Production:

Glen Ord is the fourth largest distillery in Diageo’s portfolio, with an impressive annual production capacity of 5 million liters of alcohol. The distillery sources water from Loch nam-Bannach and Loch nam Euan. The production process at Glen Ord is split into two areas, with different mash tuns and washbacks. The resulting new make spirits are identical. The distillery also utilizes condensers for thermal energy storage, maximizing energy efficiency.

The Pot Stills:

Glen Ord has six pot stills in its stillroom, consisting of three wash stills and three spirit stills. The wash stills have a capacity of 17,000 liters each, while the spirit stills are slightly smaller at 16,000 liters. The stills have distinct pear-shaped designs, and the newer still house, added in 2015, houses eight additional stills with the same shape.

Maltings:

Glen Ord is one of the few distilleries that still possesses on-site maltings. Located in the renowned barley-producing region of the Black Isle, the distillery also supplies malt to other Diageo distilleries. The malting process involves germinating the barley, followed by controlled drying on the distillery’s drying floor. Glen Ord primarily uses unpeated malt, but peated malt is produced separately and blended as desired.

Warehouse:

Glen Ord has a complex of warehouses on-site, with half of the casks being American White Oak and the other half Oloroso Sherry casks. The distillery has eight dunnage warehouses, three of which have been converted into a visitor center, while the remaining five continue to store Glen Ord Single Malt for blending.

History:

Glen Ord distillery was founded in 1838 by Thomas Mackenzie, and its history is intertwined with the MacKenzie clan. The distillery changed hands multiple times and experienced fires and renovations throughout the years. In 1966, it underwent significant renovations and expansion, increasing the number of stills. Glen Ord became part of Diageo through various mergers and acquisitions.
