Established in 1897 by James Buchanan and W.P. Lowrie, Glentauchers enjoyed success due to its strategic location and accessibility. Ownership changes followed, including becoming part of DCL (Distillery Company Limited) in 1910.

Introduction:

The Glentauchers Distillery is located in Speyside, near Keith. It is not widely known among whisky enthusiasts due to the absence of a visitor center and its primary focus on producing whisky for blends rather than single malt releases.

Whisky:

Glentauchers whisky is a key component in blends like Ballantine’s, Teacher’s, and Black & White. Official bottlings of Glentauchers single malt are rare, with only a 15-year-old expression released by the distillery in 2000. Independent bottlers such as Gordon & MacPhail, Duncan Taylor, and Douglas Laing offer releases from this distillery.

Production:

Glentauchers primarily utilizes pot still distillation, although it briefly experimented with continuous distillation in 1910 before returning to pot stills. The whisky exhibits fruity, malty, and sweet aromas.

Process:

Water for mashing is sourced from Rosarie Burn, which flows into the River Spey. The mash tun can hold approximately 12 tons of malt. Fermentation takes place in six Oregon pine washbacks with a total volume of 360,000 liters. The distillery houses three wash stills and three spirit stills, contributing to the unique character of Glentauchers’ spirit.

History:

Ownership changes followed, including becoming part of DCL (Distillery Company Limited) in 1910. Renovations were carried out in 1923-1925, and the distillery experienced periods of closure during World War I. Allied Distillers acquired Glentauchers in 1989, and it is currently under the control of Chivas Brothers, a subsidiary of Pernod Ricard.
