Introduction:

Habitation Clément specializes in producing a unique type of Rum known as Rhum Agricole. This Rum is made from sugar cane juice and is primarily produced in the French Antilles following the guidelines of the AOC (Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée).

The distillery offers a variety of Rums under different ranges. The Prestige range includes the Clément Vieux VSOP Rhum and the Clément Vieux XO Rhum. The latter is aged for a minimum of six years in new oak barrels and former bourbon barrels, resulting in a rich and matured flavor profile.

Additionally, Clément offers Rums in the Classic range and the Bar and Cocktail range. One notable product in the Bar and Cocktail range is the Clément Créole Shrubb Orange Liqueur. This unique liqueur blends the finest white and matured Agricole Rums with macerated Créole spices and sun-bleached bitter orange peel, creating a harmonious and flavorful concoction.

The Production:

The picturesque Habitation Clément estate covers an extensive area of 160 hectares and encompasses various essential elements. At the heart of the estate stands the elegant Creole main house, surrounded by lush sugar cane plantations, the state – of – the – art Rum distillery, and the aging warehouses.

The process of creating their renowned Rhum Agricole begins with the careful harvesting of sugar cane, which is then chopped, shredded, and crushed with the assistance of a steam engine. The resulting juice, known as vesou, is then fermented in large tanks to initiate the fermentation process.

The distillation of Habitation Clément’s Rum takes place in a column still, adhering to the traditional method. Moreover, the distillery strictly employs sugar cane sourced exclusively from the production country, adhering to the stringent requirements of the AOC (Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée) designation.

The Warehouses:

Visitors are welcome to explore these historic warehouses, each named after significant figures in the Clément family’s legacy: Chai Charles Clément (1996), Chai Georges – Louis Clément (1999), and Chai Jean – José Clément (2006).

These warehouses offer a captivating glimpse into the aging process of their exceptional Rums and are open to the public for visits. With a collective capacity of more than two million liters, the warehouses house a substantial amount of maturing Rum, carefully aging and developing their unique flavors over time.

The History:

The captivating history of Habitation Clément, formerly known as Domaine de l’Acajou, dates back to the 19th century. It all began with Homère Clément, a doctor and farmer, who embarked on sugar cane cultivation on his estate. In 1917, the distillery was officially established and carried on by Homère’s son, Charles Clément, following his father’s passing in 1923.

In 1973, the legacy was passed down to Charles’ sons, namely Georges-Louis, Jean-José, and Marcel – André, who continued the family’s dedication to Rhum Clément. In 1986, the Hayot family, who were close to the Clément family, took over the distillery, ensuring the preservation and continuation of the cherished Rhum Clément tradition.

Over the years, Habitation Clément has been a site for significant international meetings, including the notable Franco – American summit in 1991, where Presidents Mitterand and Bush were graciously hosted at the plantation, further enhancing its historical importance.

Due to its remarkable significance, Habitation Clément was designated as a listed building in 1996. The commitment to preserving its cultural heritage continued in 2003 when extensive restoration efforts were undertaken to revive the main house and outbuildings, further accentuating the timeless charm of this esteemed estate.

The Visitor Centre:
