Construction of Lagg Distillery began in 2017, and in spring 2019, the first spirit flowed through the stills. On April 10, 2019, cask number 1 was filled, marking a significant milestone in the distillery’s history.

Introduction:

Lagg Distillery, located on the Isle of Arran, recently bottled its first batch of Lagg Whisky in 2022. The whisky is peated to 50ppm using malted barley. The distillery is set to release the Lagg Kilmory Edition and the Lagg Corriecravie Edition soon, named after nearby villages.

Production:

Lagg Distillery sources its fresh spring water from a specially drilled well, 110 meters deep. Previously, both unpeated Arran Whisky and peated Machrie Moor Whisky were produced at the Lochranza distillery. However, now only the smoky line of Isle of Arran Distillers is produced at Lagg. The 50ppm peat used comes from the Scottish Highlands and has a woody, grassy, and floral character.

Pot Stills:

Lagg employs traditional distilling methods, with manual processes such as valve screwing and alcohol content measurement. The wash still has a volume of 10,000 liters, while the spirit still holds 7,000 liters. The wide shape of the spirit still produces an oily and grassy spirit with rich texture. The distillery has an energy recovery system that heats process water using hot water.

Mashing:

At Lagg, the mash tun is filled with four tonnes of barley meal and 16,500 liters of water. The mixture is vigorously heated and mixed with a rake to produce a cloudy wort with grassy and oily flavors.

Fermentation:

Lagg has four wooden washbacks filled with 20,000 liters of liquid, where yeast is added. Two different types of yeast are used to initiate and adjust the fermentation process. The average fermentation time is 78 hours, resulting in the desired grassy character.

Warehouses:

Lagg Distillery has ample storage space for its whisky production. The warehouses hold both Lagg and Lochranza casks, including those from the Lagg Cask Society. The distillery primarily uses 90% bourbon barrels, with a mix of first and second fills. Finishes in Sherry, Wine, Amarone, and Rum casks, including Plantation Rum, are also employed. Various cask sizes, including quarter casks and firkin casks, are utilized.
