The distillery was founded in 1821 by Peter Brown and officially began operations in 1825 after whisky distillation became legal. Initially, it had two stills, and Brown ran the distillery until his death in 1868.

Introduction:

Linkwood is a Speyside distillery with a limited selection of official bottlings. These releases are rare and mainly found in Diageo’s Flora and Fauna range and United Distiller’s Rare Malts range. Independent bottlings by various companies are also available.

Most of the spirit produced at Linkwood is used in Diageo – owned blends like Johnnie Walker and White Horse. The distillery also sells its spirit to other blenders.

Production:

Linkwood sources water from the Milbules Spring located beside the distillery. It has an impressive production capacity of 3.5 million liters per year. The distillery has undergone renovations, including the construction of a second still house in 1971, which uses six large washbacks compared to the older distillery’s five smaller ones.

Pot Stills:

Linkwood has three wash stills and three spirit stills. The wash stills have a capacity of 15,000 liters each, while the spirit stills can hold 17,000 liters each. The stills have a pear shape with large, spherical lids and tall conical necks. The spherical lids of the spirit stills are wider, allowing for slight variations in distillation. The distillery has two still houses, but currently, only one is in use. The second still house, added in 1971, increased the distillery’s production capacity.

Maltings:

Initially, Linkwood used its own floor maltings, but now it sources malts from one of Diageo’s industrial sources in Speyside. The distillery uses a combination of peated and unpeated malts, depending on the intended single malt.

Warehouse:

Linkwood has onsite warehouses, including dunnage and racked warehouses. The whisky is aged in a combination of American Oak and Spanish Sherry casks sourced from selected distilleries and vintners in the US and Spain.

History:

The distillery was founded in 1821 by Peter Brown and officially began operations in 1825 after whisky distillation became legal. Initially, it had two stills, and Brown ran the distillery until his death in 1868. His son, William, inherited the distillery and replaced the original buildings with the current distillery.
