Mannochmore
Introduction:
Mannochmore Distillery is known for its limited range of official bottlings. While a 12 – year – old expression is part of the United Distillers ‘Flora & Fauna’ range, there have been few other official releases. The distillery gained attention with its ‘Loch Dhu’ Single Malt, often referred to as the ‘Black Whisky’ due to its dark color. However, production of Loch Dhu has ceased. Independent bottlers like Douglas Laing and Gordon & MacPhail have also released Mannochmore expressions. As a workhorse distillery for Diageo, Mannochmore plays a significant role in the production of blends, including Johnnie Walker.
Production:
Mannochmore boasts an impressive production capacity of 3.2 million liters. The distillery sources water from the Bardon Burn, a tributary of the River Spey, which it shares with neighboring Glenlossie distillery. Both distilleries are operated by the same eight-person crew. Mannochmore has one cast iron lauter mash tun and eight larch washbacks.
Pot Stills:
Powered by six pot stills, Mannochmore has three wash stills with a production capacity of 14,700 liters each, and three spirit stills with a capacity of 16,100 liters each. The stills feature a traditional Speyside shape with wide spherical lids and tall conical necks. All stills are indirectly heated by steam.
Maltings:
Mannochmore uses unpeated malt sourced from Castle Head Maltings in Elgin. The barley is carefully selected from renowned Speyside farms known for their quality.
Warehouse:
Mannochmore has a combination of dunnage and racked warehouses to store both Single Malt intended for sale and spirit destined for blending. The warehouse can accommodate up to 200,000 casks, and Diageo utilizes the facility to mature other Single Malts as well.
History:
Founded in 1971 by Scottish Malt Distillers, Mannochmore distillery played a significant role in Haig’s blends during its initial production period. It was temporarily mothballed in 1985 due to economic downturn. In 1989, the distillery reopened and later became part of Diageo and United Distillers. The first official single malt bottling, a 12 – year – old expression, was released under the Flora & Fauna range. The infamous ‘Loch Dhu’ bottling, known for its heavy artificial coloring, was launched in 1997 and developed a cult following. Under Diageo’s ownership, Mannochmore continues to supply malt whisky for blends and has embraced technological advancements in the distillation process.
