Talisker distillery operated legally from the start and was never involved in illegal Whisky production. It faced bankruptcy in 1863 but resumed under new tenant Alexander Grigor Allan in 1880. The distillery closed during World War II due to barley shortages.

Introduction:

Talisker Whisky is known for its spicy character and chili kick, especially in the Talisker 10 – year – old bottling. Some Whiskies are matured in Amoroso Sherry casks for a milder, sweeter taste. The Whisky is peated with a phenol content of 20 to 25 ppm, but unfortunately, younger expressions are artificially colored. The distillery has a production capacity of three to four million liters of alcohol per year, which has increased due to Talisker’s popularity. Water is sourced from Burn am Cnoc nam Speireag.

The Pot Stills:

Talisker has five pot stills, including two wash stills (10,000 liters) and three spirit stills (approximately 7,500 liters). The wash stills have reflux bowls and are tall, while the smaller spirit stills lack reflux bowls and are responsible for the distillery’s spicy character. The alcohol is condensed in traditional copper worm tubs.

The Malting:

The malting floors at Talisker were demolished in 1972, and a stainless steel mashtun with a copper lid is now used to reduce heat dissipation.

The Warehouse:

Talisker’s warehouses are relatively flat, with casks stored only two rows high. They are located near or next to the Atlantic Ocean.

History:

Talisker distillery operated legally from the start and was never involved in illegal Whisky production. It faced bankruptcy in 1863 but resumed under new tenant Alexander Grigor Allan in 1880. The distillery closed during World War II due to barley shortages. A major fire destroyed the still-house in 1960, but it was rebuilt and reopened in 1962. The distillery underwent renovation and modernization in 1972, including the closure of malting floors and the switch from coal to steam heating. Output increased from 1.5 million liters to 3.5 million liters during the 1990s and early 2000s.

The Visitor Center:

Talisker’s visitor center and shops offer informative experiences. Three distillery tours are available, with the top tour including an extensive tasting and a full distillery tour. The distillery is accessible by car via a bridge to the Scottish mainland since 1995.
