Introduction:

The whiskies produced by the German Ziegler distillery are characterized by their pronounced sweetness and strong sherry and wine influences. While they are known for their whisky production, the primary focus of the Ziegler distillery remains on crafting fruit spirits.

The Production:

Situated in the heart of Franconia, the distillery experiences a notably distinct climate compared to Scotland. The local climate is often likened to the Mediterranean, with markedly hotter summers and colder winters. Unlike the milder maritime climate of Scotland, the maturation process in Franconia leans heavily on oak influence. This imparts a heightened spiciness to the whiskies, even among younger expressions.

The Pot stills:

Regrettably, the pot stills in use are not custom – designed for whisky production. The fruit stills employed are notably compact and feature a constriction just above the tubular base. The limited height of these stills poses a challenge in effectively separating the intense aromas present in the wash and the low wines, impacting the distillation process.

The Malting:

The Ziegler distillery exclusively emphasizes the production of non-peated malt whisky.

The Warehouse:

The Ziegler distillery’s warehouse includes a cellar for storing their spirits. They deliberately employ a diverse array of casks, aiming to achieve a wide range of flavors and profiles in their whisky.
